The Kenya Cereal Enhancement Programme – Climate-Resilient Agricultural Livelihoods Window (KCEP-CRAL) is an IFAD-funded project, implemented from 2017-2023 in Machakos County, Kenya, that has achieved significant results in improving nutrition outcomes, livelihoods, and resilience among smallholder farmers. The project utilized integrated nutrition-sensitive agriculture (NSA) interventions to address these issues effectively.
Key Achievements
The project led to substantial improvements in nutrition and food security. For example, malnutrition admissions in outpatient clinics dropped from 34% in 2020 to 8% in 2023. Additionally, the prevalence of anemia among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics decreased from 44% to 4% over the same period. The promotion of diverse, nutrient-dense crops, including traditional vegetables and biofortified varieties, significantly contributed to these outcomes.
Innovative Approaches
KCEP-CRAL introduced several innovative approaches to support smallholder farmers. The Gender Action Learning System (GALS) methodology promoted gender equity and joint decision-making, leading to better nutrition practices at the household level. The project also implemented an e-voucher program, which provided farmers with subsidized inputs through accredited agro-dealers. This approach increased farmers’ access to quality inputs and promoted financial literacy.
This case study was visited during a field trip organized as part of the Learning Route “Seeding Prosperity: How Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture is Transforming Africa.” Participants gained firsthand insights into the project’s successful implementation and impact. This experience provided valuable lessons for adapting and adopting similar practices in their own contexts and projects.
