Marine Protected Areas: ZEPA/ZEMP AND DRMI

Development of a dynamic fishing activity aimed at preserving the marine ecosystem and generating economic development opportunities

The Exclusive Artisanal Fishing Zone (ZEPA) is a territorial management instrument for marine zones that covers an area of 2.5 nautical miles from the coast between Punta Solano (southern limit in Bahía Solano) to Punta Ardita (northern limit in Juradó), where the use of traditional fishing gear, which is environmentally friendly, is promoted. It aims to develop a dynamic fishing activity, oriented to the preservation of species and the marine ecosystem and the generation of economic development opportunities for artisanal fishermen, including the implementation of socially based associative processes.

As a result of the community, associative and institutional processes that have been developing in the Chocoan Pacific around the protection of coastal marine resources, in December 2014 the Corporación Autónoma Regional del Chococó – CODECHOCÓ created the Regional District of Integrated Management (DRMI) Golfo de Tribugá – Cabo Corrientes. Like the ZEPA/ZEMP, it is a land management instrument that delimits a marine area for the sustainable use and management of coastal marine resources.
